50 Cent is on a rampage. With Dre feigning ignorance about his headphones and throwing shade, Mr. Jackson looks like he’s back as the underdog and that hunger is energizing his recent music. “When I Come Back” is more of the same, with 50 practically foaming at the mouth, ready to attack.
The track is that hard shit, complete with hard high hats and snare and a subtle but critical drum. There is a snaking bassline that undulates above and below. There are meaty strings on the periphery and a general forward motion that matches 50’s aggression.
50 is hardcore on this. While the hook is a bit melodic, that singing stuff is deaded. He finds himself in the position he was when he came into the industry, watching pop elements mute the raw Hip-Hop music. He begins the song back in Southside Jamaica with dreams of taking the streets. He got a new chick, he got new connects and runs through a few women similar to Jay-Z’s “Girls, Girls, Girls.” He closes with his typical rants after the song is over, this one castigating sucker-for-love dudes going soft. 50 obviously ain’t buying it.
It’s good to hear him sound hungry. Hopefully this time, when he comes back, there will be a little less singing, more rugged beats, and more of the raw. We’ll see. There’s probably a mixtape following this.
