Nina B had been putting in underground works for years. Despite that hard work and all the mixtapes, it seems that some of you have no idea who she is. She’s out to fix all of that with her latest song (and video) “You Know Who I Am.”
The vid is shot around the way with pop references collaged throughout to connect her punch lines if you don’t get them. While she is provocatively dressed, there isn’t any gratuitous T&A and the vid is definitely watchable by the kids. Nina is Brooklyn all day and so is the video, from stoops of brownstones to dollar vans rolling by and Crown Heights graffiti. There are also the obligatory ice cream eating kids from around the way seemingly out of place old people, and the ice grilling t-shirt wearing cats from the block.
Electric guitars and synth power this track in staccato arrangement. There’s a boom clap boom boom boom clap rhythm formation but not many more moving parts after that.
The rhyme structure is Big Sean/Draked but in such a way that it’s call and answer. Some are predictable (300 strong…Leonidas), some are effed up (I’m all alone…Dame Dash) and some are damn what happened to them (Keenan & Kel, I’m All Of that). You can get fatigued with the basic punch line setups, but the video adds much to the song.
Will this song force you to get hip to Nina? Prolly not. She’s had stronger rhymes. But it will probably make you a fan of the New York Giants.
