Raphael Saadiq has been tip-toeing through bygone eras for some time now, generally just making pit stops to the present for the sake of the artists he writes and produces for. His personal material hasn’t moved into the new millennium and Saadiq’s fans wouldn’t have other way. The title of his upcoming LP, Stone Rollin’, sounds suspiciously retro and the lead single, “Radio,” falls right in line with that aesthetic.
It’s an early 60’s dance tune that hosts a surfer riff and a narrative about a stalker named “Radio.” She’s an easy touch and once you hit it, she will follow you around town. Be governed accordingly.
You might immediately be swept back to the days of bouffants and sock hops with this one. The lyrics even sound like they were recorded through heavy air or with a broken mic. I’m assuming the lo-fi component is to make the throwback element even more believable.
Don’t get Mr. Saadiq twisted. This isn’t some ode to the olden days that incorporates elements of that sound into a current track. This song oozes early Motown and probably has some of its DNA. So learn how to do the Madison and pull those skinny slacks out of your grand dad’s closet. “Radio” is too much old school fun to pass up.
