Alison Mosshart managed to untangle herself from Jack White long enough to partner back up with Jamie Hince for a fourth The Kills album. It’s been a year and a half in the making as Mosshart stole time to record from her Dead Weather obligations. The sound is different than what you have come to expect from the duo. So if you’re not a fan of evolution you can start frowning now.
“Satellite,” the first single, keeps a slow cadence with guitar elements that have an almost Caribbean vibe. This song doesn’t feature one of those ska-like open foundations. The industrial intro builds into a dense and dark song with a heavy distortion that peaks through when the guitars are especially busy.
You could decipher these lyrics in a million different ways from lost love, to a lack of communication to a great theme for a mobile phone carrier. Someone’s wires are getting crossed and she, whoever she is, is about to get lost. The satellite is betraying The Kills and they are going to miss that girl when she Is gone; or her call drops.
This song simmers for its duration but that’s about it. There’s not a lot of drama here, but if you like noise-riddled, island rock this is definitely up your alley. “Satellite.” Enjoy.
