Oddisee is one of the most underrated rapper/producers in the Hip-Hop industry. Sharp self-written rhymes along with a wide variety of music give him an arsenal that very few Hip-Hoppers can match. On his latest collaboration with artist Toine, entitled “Different Now.” It’s lush in production and uses many devises to get their point across.

The track opens with a soul sample that’s heavy but not depressing. The choice gives weight to the song with its bassline and the vocal section. Oddisee then pulls in muted drums and snaking snares slither around high hats and wah wahed guitars on the edges. There is an organ undercurrent and strings on the breaks. The composition switches from analog to digital in the middle of Toine’s verse with digital strings that overtake the beat and a muffled echo like walking up the stairs and getting closer to the house party, hearing the beats through the walls as you get closer. They pull the beat and close with a short vocal.

Oddisee speaks on how things that were once important to you fade in significance as you grow. As a teen all you can think about is getting some cut, but as you grow older you realize that not all cooch is good for you. You stop trying to see night become day, and you spend more nights in front of your television. Those $100 sneakers become less important than that light bill. That bachelor freedom and the TV dinners don’t look as appealing as cooked food from a woman that can hold you down. Such is growth.

Toine remembers trying to get his act together and not seeing a future for himself and deciding that wasn’t going to cut it. He’s still cynical “cheating on revolution with part time solutions” (getting a regular job to keep those lights on while he chases his dream) and not falling for the major label fuckery that pimps artists from the spoils of their work.

This track is simple in direction but dope in execution. Oddisee is ready to bust the door wide open for DMV Hip-Hop.  The rhymes are crisp, his lyricism and delivery are improving, his string mastery is increasing and his overall craft is developing nicely. Things are “Different Now.” The DMV got something to say.
