The Varsity Blues EP is some of Murs’ best work; haunting production with introspective rhymes that capture the hard side of life. Murs’ unfinished delivery added to the power of it all and his legion of fans still rock it from time to time. Recently, Murs caught the sequel flu and Varsity Blues 2 is one of the more anticipated indie rap albums of 2011. If the title track is any indication, Varisty Blues 2 might be competition for its predecessor.
The production, courtesy of Aesop Rock, combines classic rock sounds with electronic influence and jazz horns for a dramatic foundation for Murs to revisit the dark narratives that made the first Varsity Blues great.
The lyrics are fitting considering the mass uproar that followed the release of the happy-go-lucky, ass-chasing anthem, “Melrose.”
They say I’m only good when the session is depressing/So I crucify myself so that you can learn a lesson
Murs meanders away from pacing behind hotties in California and dancing with Barney to dive deep into grim self-doubt and self-medication. Liquor clouds his mind, pain numbs his brain and the darkness is closing in. Insomnia is his best friend and those late night, wide awake writing sessions are what fuel the side of him the fans love.
Varsity Blues 2 is sad, evocative and haunting. Hopefully this man’s fans aren’t really driving him crazy. Everybody is entitled to layers folks. Murs sings the blues; the second time around. Enjoy.
