Cee-Lo Green has tentacles like an octopus and his constant morph and meander from style to style is pretty amazing. Plenty of us want to hear him rap again, especially if it’s with his other 3 compadres from Atlanta. That revival is still a dream, but in the interim Mr. Green has moved from old school soul to dubstep, tossing some assistance to Chase & Status for their latest album, No More Idols.
The track, “Brixton Briefcase,” builds slowly from a restless bounce and smears of effects to a murky distortion fest full off extra heavy bass and lots of grinding synth. The relatively slow pace adds to the depth and the random noisy puffs add a great texture to this song.
Cee-Lo’s words are also bathed in distortion, plus he carries an echo. So I’ll leave deciphering all the lyrics to the folks who write C&S’s liner notes. But this song almost sounds like an ode to the Radio Raheem’s of the world who derive a power rush from grabbing their boom box and walking through the streets offending other citizens by kicking their volume way past ten. Its throw back, but the nostalgia is great.
The song ambles from calm to frenzied and back, but Cee-Lo’s voice is so strong, he manages to rise above the frenetics without screeching. Job well done.
The “Brixton Breifcase” will never die as long as you have those mutherfukkin D’s. Word to Bill Nunn.
