Disassociation has been hard for Jigga’s former Roc brood. Even when Beans showers ex label mates with lyrical abuse, he’s re-establishing his relationship with Roc-A-Fella in the mind of the listener. Young Chris takes the opposite approach on his latest internet drop, “Trouble On My Mind,” referring to the Roc grind as if he’s still popping bottles with Jay and Dame. Is he afraid to accept that the apron strings have been cut? Maybe, but odd hook aside, this is still a good listen.
The track is spy movie dramatic, leading with a fluttering horn and anxious piano that hovers eerily at the bottom of the scales. Slow, unbalanced drums add texture. The background singers provide a bluesy layer that works well with Chris’ worrisome story.
Unholstered heat, growing rap sheets and wanted posters are part of Chris’ everyday and the heaviness of the danger weighs on his mind. His mom is overworked. His little brother is hustling. Weed and liquor cloud his mind. His boys are locked up and major labels don’t take his phone calls anymore. You might see him at the show and think it’s all gravy, but the truth is Young Chris has issues.
Chris is sharp and when he’s not all about Gucci and gold, he emotes with the best of them and not in a corny emo way. This is grown man pain and his ability to tackle this type of material speaks to his maturity as an artist, even if he still can’t distance himself from big brother.
