Tech N9ne just released Seepage a couple of months ago. However, his ever grinding grind finds his fans on the eve of another release, Bad Season. This is more a Strange Music all in together now mixtape than a Tech project. There are only two songs that host Mr. Yates all by his lonely, but that’s no issue. His sidekick, Krizz Kaliko is never one to drop a lame verse and Kutt Kalhoun fits in with the crew properly.
A few of the songs have leaked already including the most recent pair, “Hard Liquor” and “Table and Chest Stress.” I guess the Strange Music general decided to get his two solo joints out of the way to clear a path for the barrage of posse cuts.
“Hard Liquor” is co-produced by Dr. Dre and features Travis Barker on the drums. The beat is a definite throwback to the Aftermath sound that escorted Dre out of the G-Funk era and rounded him out as a producer. Only problem is we haven’t heard much different from Dre since. I know evolution is a double-edged sword. People bitch when you change. They bitch if you stay the same. But if you create the same beat for ten years, that’s just a dull butter knife.
There’s nothing really exciting about Tech’s delivery. Compared to what he’s capable of, this is a bit lethargic. The guitar and drums set on top on the 2nd verse, which is just the first verse looped, seem out of place. The vocals on the hook are very Knoc-Turn’al from “Bad Intetions”-ish. The end is just chaotic, but it’s a free mixtape, and I’ve heard worse. I won’t complain too much.

Next up is “Table and Chest Stress” with it’s pared down to the birthday suit beat. Tech explains at the top when he was a youngster there were no beats; just his fist and the table. So the track is one drum and Tech. The theme is simple. Life is stressful. People are out to take. Bad decisions abound and sometimes death appears easier than life. He also likes to bend bad bitches over tables and he does not put his face anywhere near the kitty. This is easier to enjoy than “Hard Liquor.” Tech’s lyrics are a bit more thoughtful and the double and quadruple time flows are there.
