Stalley is back with a few things to say about puppets dressed like rap artists and the masters that pull their strings on his new single “Monkey Ish.” In tow is the spirit of Chad Butler who told the studio gangsters and corporate contrived fakers years ago that they were an embarrassment to anyone authentic and if they had a problem with that they could step. Stalley’s shtick is a little less confrontational than Pimp C’ style in “Mean Mug” but he still picks apart the posers over swirling strings and layered digital ambiance courtesy of Rashad Thomas.
Plenty of rappers are liars. Then the liars attract sheep-like followers who live to be part of the scene, knowing it’s all a fraud. For a shiny chain and V.I.P. status they roll into studios and clubs everywhere shitting on the culture and lining the pockets of suits in corner offices.
Stalley presents himself almost like a Hip-Hop super hero, hiping the masses to the hypocrisy of keeping it hood while freeing minds locked in the “Syllables” mentality. He’s also the go to guy for the alternative; honest soulful sounds that were once the foundation of the genre. Deep, huh?
Money vs. integrity is a subject that has sparked plenty of debate. No, honor doesn’t pay bills. However, dummy du jour is an ephemeral occupation and probably not worth the backlash you catch after you have been replaced. Whether you vote yes or no on the sell-out subject, Stalley manages to tackle a serious subject with a seriously lush vibe. You may find him preachy, but you’ll enjoy listening to his soapbox stance.
Happy Birthday Pimp C!
