Upon its initial release in 2008, the Bangladesh-produced “A Milli” spread like wildfire as an instant hit. It eventually went on to go double platinum and was a key reason why Lil Wayne’s album the Carter III was a smashing success. The best incarnation of the track featured an atomic Cory Gunz detonating on the track, so much so, that he was removed from the final cut for reasons not to be discussed. Two years later (and probably too late) Peter’s progeny is now signed to Young Money and the thrilling trio attempt to recreate “A Milli” magic with new track “6’7.””
The same structure is intact with a repetitive infectious vocal sample and deep 808 lows punctuated by the occasional snare drum. The sample is from Harry Belafonte’s immortal “Banana Boat Song.” While the rhythm is essentially the same, the rappers choose a slower approach to the track this time around.
Wayne gets three verses this time around and doesn’t really take advantage of his bar-free style. He instead adopts a punchline set up configuration which brings him closer to convention. Although there are some really dope lines in his section, his delivery is hampered by this approach. His vocals are higher in range than his normal low drawl and that also detracts from the Weezy we know and love. That said, there are tons of morsels in here to pick out at your leisure. One verse too many for this kind of song, however.
Once again, Cory Gunz’ otherworldly delivery and high-paced lyricism knocks Weezy off the horse. It’s not that Weezy was weak, but after three conventional verses he is undone by the change of pace and Gunz’ kinetic energy.
In all, call this “A Milli”-lite. You can’t capture lightning in a bottle twice and as imitation this is flattering but not the genuine article. Good to see someone on Young Money besides Drake that can hang with the boss.
