Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, particularly when it’s carried out with zest. Jagged Edge has been filling the gap in our consciousness from the departure of Jodeci since they debuted in 1998. 12 years later, they take that thug harmony further with their latest single “My Baby.”
The track’s basic melody is 80’s R&B classic “Happy” from the group Surface. For the whippersnappers out there reading this, it’s the main sample from Kool G Rap’s “Fast Life.” There are a few scratches here and there and some atmospheric noise to flesh out the composition.
The intro finds the boys emulating Jodeci’s “Come And Talk To Me” remix intro a capela and on the breaks between the verses to a boom-clap rhythm. The song itself is an ode to loving the boo that you are with. It’s thankfully without the lame do me baby shit that has been running rampant in the music these days. The song is also loving, in a masculine way; devoid of the impotent begging that’s also all over the place. In essence, baby, I appreciate you, I’m glad I have you, and what did I do to deserve your fine ass. I can dig it.
Jagged Edge is one of the few groups that have proven able to walk the line between fun and frivolity; able to get the ladies out of their panties, but not make it seem like that’s their ONLY motive. That natural harmony they have is still intact and they still sound sharp. They music to bump to that you can also hump to, amd they are able to emote without sounding like suckers. “My Baby” is solid.

Jagged Edge’s “My Baby” is horrible and below their standard of R&B ballads. Remember their classics “Let’s Get Married,” “Walk Outta Heaven” and “He Can’t Love You”? Their new track pales in comparison.
