Planet Ill Breakdown: Beach House-I Do Not Care For The Winter Sun

By shelz.

Anyone who knows me knows I have no love for Christmas music.  The jingle jangle of contrived happiness rings hollow in my ears when I’m fighting the urge to kick random rude shoppers in the shins as I scurry through the crowded mall.  They call me Mrs. Scrooge.  Word to Sidney Portier.

However, with the yearly onslaught of Christmas tunes underway and the fact that I kinda dig that Blackalicious song, I decided the next holiday song that I found would get V.I.P. service over here at Planet Ill.  The lucky artists are Beach House.

Beach House is in the midst of being one of the most celebrated indie bands on earth as they collect their inclusions into multiple taste-making publications’ best of 2010 lists for Teen Dream. So I would assume they are feeling all happy and generous, hence a free holiday song. Plus this works out for me because Beach House is way too thoughtful to go for the obvious December shtick, right?

Right.

“I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun” is a melancholy ode to all that sucks about winter; the cold weather, the short days, being cooped up in the house.  Scally’s bemoaning of his least favorite season is wrapped in a beautifully somber coat of sound.  The sleigh bells come and go as the only distinctive instrument in the piece as everything else is bathed in a wistful blur. It’s a contemplative song that is suggestive of sitting in the window, staring out at the blanket of snow, willing the sun to melt it all away so you can go play.  Lovely.

“I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun” either, but this song is dreamy Baltimore goodness. Happy Holidays.
