And The Beat Goes On: Nipsey Is Electric, Diggy Is Relaxed And jj Puts In That Work

By shelz.

Happy merry almost Christmas folks. It’s time for our weekly look at all that’s good, and not so much, in the world of track theft and song swipes. People are getting flattered all over the place this week with all this imitation going around.  I guess it’s the season of taking and remaking so let’s get to the incidents that raised a few eyebrows over here this week so we can present our weekly handful of track retreads.  Yoooo.  Is Foxy making a diss song?  About Lil Kim?  And releasing it on a holiday?  Original.

Sigh.

I don’t know.  Hopefully, she will speak English this time.  Good luck girl.

Also, Lauryn Hill is doing like 16 concerts in New York the first month of the year.  Possibly making up for the past ten years in one week?  I’m curious. Why not just book a big venue and do one show instead of 80 shows in a spot that holds 200?  It makes as much sense as Foxy playing third wheel in the Lil Kim/Nicki Minaj hullabaloo.   Which is ummm…none.

Last, but not least, Ciara sold like 8 records but said that’s okay because caring about record sales is so last decade.  She has a point actually.  As long as she’s making that show money she should be fine.  Maybe she can open for Lauryn Hill.  22 shows in like 4 days should carry her until her next no-selling album drops.  Hey, I can say that.  Ciara doesn’t care about selling music, even though she’s… well … a musician.

Now on with the show.  First up is Nispey Hussle.

I guess since Hussle is no longer looking forward to an album release we will be seeing some more street releases from him.  On his most recent mixtape, The Marathon, Nispey makes use of MGMT’s “Electric Feel.”  It’s an odd combo, but it works.  Hussle’s money is right, his grind is tight and the models show lots of love.  Oh and shout out to the haters.

Next is jj.  I guess the whole spirit of giving has taken over some of our favorite artists this week as jj released Kills, a mixtape making use of some of our favorite Hip-Hop tracks.  The combos are odd but enjoyable.  “New Work” is a mashup of sorts with Jay-Z and Broder Daniel represented by “Empire State of Mind” and “Work” respectively.  Nice.

Joell Ortiz is next with a few verses over “Roman’s Revenge.”  It’s fast paced and urgent.  Joell hangs as he explains how nice he is with a tinge of Caribbean and a lot of great metaphors.  We know he’s dope, but we also know this Shady signing is taking a scary long time.  We’ll see what happens.  Enjoy.

If “Electric Relaxation” isn’t my favorite Tribe track, it’s really close.  So of course I wasn’t thrilled to see Diggy was wiping the slate clean and trying to rap over it. But why complain?  He’s better than a lot of rappers who consider themselves professionals.  Anyway, Diggy likes ‘em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican and Indian.  That’s as far as I got.

Last, but not least, is Fab sweetening it up for the ladies over J. Cole’s “In The Morning.” I’ve heard better from dude, much better.  It’s nice to hear a rapper going into two minutes of song without finding a reason to disrespect the ladies.  I still don’t like it though.
