My Chemical Romance aren’t done with their fabulous lives quite yet. They have added another layer to the Mad Maxian fighters for truth justice and the Killjoy way. Now the crew has been assigned a favorite band, The Mad Gear and Missile Kid. Haven’t heard of them? That’s okay, they’re new.
Actually they are MCR with a revved up sense of belligerence and more rock inspiration. According to the group, this is the music the Killjoys were listening to during their gun battles with Big Brother Better Living and the songs are dramatic enough to serve as the back drop for flying bullets.
The 3-piece starts with “F.T.W.W.W. (Fuck The Whole Wide World.)” Its deep grinding bottom plays foundation to guitars that slice through the verses only to take kamikaze dives on the chorus. The song construction is less grandiose that most of the music on the album, but when a song heaves with this type of force you don’t need all that fancy stuff. Way’s delivery will take you back a few albums as he teeters on screaming about some kinky relationship he had with an android girl. At least I think that’s what this is about.
Next up is “Mastas of Ravenkroft.” It’s louder, faster and even more cantankerous. The lyrics seem to be about old people with an unhealthy love for animals. Dressing up like a cat, turning into a rat, drowning wolves and even what sounds like duck callers at the helm. Who knows? One thing is for sure though; Toro shreds this song front to back. The band then bemoans being old and voila, it’s done.
Closing down the Killjoy party is “Black Dragon Fighting Society.” This song moves at an insane pace so I’m not going to hazard an attempt at the lyrics. It’s free-flowing punk with some great double time drums and a guitar that squeals loud enough to wake the neighbors even if you’re listening on headphones. Need some music to practice your mosh pit technique to? Well here you go.
This is a really dope addendum to a pretty good album. If it was longer than 6 minutes, I might even be able to says it’s better than the LP it accompanies. Since it isn’t, I won’t, but it’s enjoyable as hell if you feel like raging against the machine Killjoy style.
