Lloyd Banks been dropping heat lately, collaborating with different artists and getting so much burn after his gold single that even Buck and Game are thinking twice about being G-Unot. But family is family and 50 has been there for Banks from jump so it’s only right that he show up on the Blue Friday run to give Banks some burn. Their latest track, “Payback (P’s & Q’s )” only finds 50 on the hook, but still in full effect.
The track features a menacing bassline and a boom bap drum with piano play to round out the sound. The melody of 50’s hook dictates the rhythm of the track by establishing pace. Digital strings bring some oomph to the track with their intermittent stabs. It’s similar in construction to “Cake,” another 50 and Banks pairing with the piano driven rhythm and 50 on the hook.
Bank’s voice is decidedly less raspy than it has been recently. He doesn’t sound like he’s straining either. Now that Shyne sounds like old Banks perhaps this level is an acceptable vocal compromise. Ranks doesn’t litter this track with an abundance of punch lines, but his presence is solid. 50 obviously stands out in the charisma department and he brings a higher energy to the song than Banks could alone. He doesn’t spit a verse, but his hook work is still the razor’s edge.
Another win for the unit, more musical money in Bank’s bank, and some added momentum on the road to The Hunger For More 2. “Payback” is a mother. Don’t get sonned. Enjoy.
