Theophilus London doesn’t have a heart-stopping voice. He’s not the best rapper in the world. But there is something about the way he pieces together a song with what he is provided that should be canned and sold to all of these beats and rhymes dudes who will never get out of the playground cipher. Whether the song is a re-imagining or a brand new piece, it’s normally engaging and worthy of repeat status.
This time around, Theophilus brings Solange Knowles along for the ride and invites Devonte Hynes to join them from behind the boards on “Flying Overseas.” It’s quite the airy 80’s ode to long distance travel.
The deep, slow bounce of the bass grounds the song as the smack of the drum balances the track. The frequency creeps up a bit only to be restrained and returned to bassment level while sparse synth stabs float in and cut thru the thud. The Taste of Honey strings that are strewn about add an exotic touch.
London sings of a cab trip to the airport and all of the anticipation packed in the trunk. He’s going to a foreign land. He’s taking a chick with him to jet set and create some memories. Solange’s and Hynes’ background vocals complete the package with Knowles especially adding a nice touch as the love interest.
“Flying Overseas” isn’t all slick and radio ready but its construction is unique and the song is the thoughtful type that could frame a hazy warm vacation day well. So if you are “Flying Overseas” make sure you pack this on the ipod. Its warm, lazy thump will be perfect for your vacay soundtrack.
