The new music avalanche continues with T.I.’s “Mr. Kodak.” I hope this song isn’t scheduled for No Mercy as much as I hope that cover is a hoax because well…I’m not feeling either. Considering the title, we could line up the mug shot metaphors like alleged guilty dudes behind one way glass, but we won’t, because that wouldn’t be nice.
“Mr. Kodak” is a literal reference to all the flash bulbs that pop when Clifford walks into the room. Girls pull out their phones to prove they were close to him. The pap hounds him because he’s the main attraction wherever he goes. He keeps the wrist and neck jeweled up because he has a rep to protect. The allegory floats in and out as well. When he communicates, it’s always high in mega pixels so he’s crystal clear. He’s more developed than anything you could accomplish in a dark room. You get the point, which seems to be the same one throughout the entire song.
The track is standard eerie southern thump. It’s slow, fluid and dark with some adlibs that sound strangely OJ the Juiceman-ish. So I’m not sure if he will show up on a remix or not, but I can’t see how he could make this song any better.
“Mr. Kodak” is generic mixtape fodder so it’s exactly where it should be. If we learned anything from this exercise, it’s that OJ hasn’t fallen off the face of the earth (to the disappointment of New York City no doubt) and that a barrage mug shot jokes may have been a bit more interesting than this song.
