I listened to “S&M” at least ten times before I took to the keyboard. My first thought was there is no way this is Rihanna, she doesn’t sound all nasally. Then there are those moments when her voice gets a little gravely as she strains on the notes. It’s not bad, but it’s not what I remember Rihanna sounding like. Not to mention that theme. Chains and whips and the smell of punany hanging in the air? Oh my.
The sex kitten side of Miss Fenty does meander from prissy purr to full on roar, so the topic at hand shouldn’t shock. However, this is track one on Loud so she’s definitely setting a tone here. Sexual innuendo is a thing of the past in most popular music as plenty of lyrics read like porno scripts, but people professing a love for being tied up and whipped doesn’t come around to often. At least, not from mainstream artists.
The track is a simple dance piece. It’s led by a basic pattern on the digital keys that’s looped throughout most of the song. It drops out at points leaving a skeletal pulse propelled by some thump and a clap. I can see the strobe light and bodies gyrating on the dance floor to this. I also hear a few of you ladies repeating these lyrics with reckless abandon, but realize later you will have to explain to your dance partner that he really can’t tie you up and spank you later. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Is it great? No, but it will serve its purpose of starting the album off full speed and getting the folks who enjoy Rihanna’s bad side invested quickly. So crack the whip and turn it up, Loud. It’s “S&M” baby. Enjoy.
