So Lupe’s Lasers is going to double as an OST for a long lost John Hughes film? Okay, maybe not, but you can’t listen to “Never Forget You” and think of anything but the harsh memory lane youngsters force themselves through the minute they are old enough to drink legally.
I can’t say it’s just the youthful. Plenty of extra grown folks I know tell that story about when their high school became the regional champs way too often. Looking back is part of moving on though, that’s why when songs like this pop up, heart strings are strummed and the reminiscing begins.
There is a little more to this song than crying for lost adolescence as Lupe fades back to an existence with someone who is no longer around. He walks the path, tackles the power of passionate relationships and the environment that made the connections possible over a part pop, part R&B hybrid track with some lively drums and a synth line built to make the emotion flow through the piece.
This song is evocative in a single tear of remembrance kind of way. It’s not the Lupe we think of when we think of Lupe, but folks are allowed layers. He’s not cutting aggins with contorted metaphors but his skill transfers well to this song and the pop fluffy stuff is tempered with Legend’s soulful delivery on the chorus and Lupe’s lyricism unlike on his last attempt at sentimentality.
So grab a tissue and your favorite photo album. “Never Forget You” will definitely have you waxing nostalgic. Just please remember, we’ve already heard that story about your last second hail Mary more than enough. Try to think of something else.
Thanks,
