While Hip-Hop continues to search for its femcees with a flashlight in the middle of the day like they were all named Bobby Fischer, it’s always nice to get a surprise drop from the xx contingent. It leads you down memory lane to that moment when you stood in Tower with a Latifah tape in one hand and a Lyte tape in the other wishing you had twice as much money because they were both equally deserving of your pennies. (Yeah I said tape youngins.)
It’s not like that now of course, and while the gnashing of teeth continues over the pepto special everyone is chattering about, Jean Grae drops one hell of an interesting track on us.
“Bridge” comes from Year Of Blacksmith Community Mixtape and swipes one of the better tracks from RJD2’s 2007 album, The Third Hand. It’s a sexy, stuttering foundation with a grinding synth and some beeping reminiscent of an IV drip. The prattling foreign guy and the sultry hook, courtesy of Mela Machinko, are new and Grae explains the brilliance of her layers and how she and Mr. X make wonderful music together on the verse. They must because she does a pretty good job all by herself.
Jean and Mela’s vocals overlap as the chanteuse toots her horn and the lyricist lays her cards out on the table. Mr. X is the right one for her, and Grae’s anticipation of the budding relationship gets the best of her, so she asks. “Whats next?” You know you want me. I can be everything you need. Stop acting like you don’t recognize. Word.
The tracks from Grae and Machinko don’t come as often as we would like and they aren’t recognized as much as they should be when they do. So enjoy the “Bridge,” the hook and the verse because you never know when you will have it this good from a woman again.
