Blu and U-God over a Flying Lotus track?  It’s not exactly an expected collaboration, but as long as it’s not Bieber, I’m down.

For “Keep It Going,” Flying Lotus hands the odd couple an instrumental that’s grounded by the slow bounce of a digital drum set on subterranean low.  Every time the bounce is about to get away, Lotus drags it back, forming a woofer busting loop.  There are digital smears here and there; a clap and what sounds like sleigh bells that pop up sporadically to add some thickness.  The hook finds all of those elements combined, plus a vocal sample and some nifty (yeah I said nifty) scratching courtesy of Rhettmattic.

Blu finds his mellow on this track and embraces it, but his mellow ushers his lyrics into the undecipherable range.  You get bits and pieces.  His feet are planted and his eyes are slanted. He’s in the booth with orange juice and lime.  He mentions something about the Kama Sutra and popping bottles with models, but Lotus takes the spotlight here. Unless you like to rewind and strain your ears, this is the producer’s song. If it’s any consolation, he sounds like he may be saying something interesting.

It’s good, not great, but definitely worth a spin or two in the i-pod.

P.S. Unless you’re down for a game of Where’s Waldo, just say that’s U-God on the sample and act like he didn’t really get a credit for this. “Keep It Going,” or don’t.  Enjoy.
