The new guard of Hip-Hop willing to work with each other across any boundaries. Gone are the days when being the different regions prevented artists from working with together. ATLien B.o.B. has had a banner year and as it draws to a close, he’s not sitting on his ass. He brings in Pittsburg pistol Wiz Khalifa for the Kanye West-produced “Fuck the Money.”
A dancing piano saunters over a subterranean bass. The lively combination is bolstered by a sliced up vocal sample from Joni Mitchell’s “River” that speaks to the meaning of the song. The piano and the bass run the length of the track like Tron light cycles bobbing and weaving through space adjacent and parallel. The Mitchell sample is interspersed cutting through B.o.B.’s runs before they run 16 length but the rhythm is well-maintained.
B.o.B. has dreamed of this day his whole life and now that he’s there in the midst of fame, it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. There is pressure to maintain image, there are long nights and short days. There are adoring fans and Bobby Ray seems to be near his full of it. B.o.B. notes “It’s funny, cause this is what I waited to be. “Being onstage was amazing to me, but now I’m in the game it ain’t the way that it seems,” notes B.o.B. as he apologizes to his parents for giving up school for his music, knowing that with no schooling he is really trapped in this biz. All he can hope to do is “make a lot of money and I’m gonna quit this crazy scene.”
Wiz Khalifa flows tight to this melody but as usual, he can’t resist the temptation to squeeze weed and chicks into his rhyme. The song’s foundation offers Wiz a wonderful chance to add some depth but he goes no further than mentioning the trappings of wealth and the things that the fame afford you, but not enough on how it traps you, which Bobby Ray went through much effort to illuminate. He does sound mighty good on this track regardless.
As Debbie Allen once said on the intro to the TV show “Fame,” fame costs. Make sure youre ready to pay the price. One day you’ll be so miserable that even with the cars, clothes and the jewels you’ll be ready to say “Fuck This Money.” You’ve been warned. Enjoy.
