I was getting my haircut when news came out that the king was dead. I had grown up with his music and all I could think of was get my ass out of this chair before I end up crying in the street. He hadn’t had much new material in a minute, but if you looked hard enough you could find unreleased and rare music that other cats didn’t have so you could always be satiated. He was not only an unparalleled performer but an astute businessman; smart enough to record music for his forbears that did not have the chains of label ownership or attachment that could be used to feed his kids long after he was gone. Rumor has it that the song count numbers around 300. The first happens to be “Breaking News.”
The track sounds like his music during the History era with similar vocal runs and back ground arrangements. The background vocals are not as laser sharp as he is known for, leading some to suspect that the song was a fake, but the composition has been certified by him mother, executor of his estate. While the base of the song bears that History similarity there are high speed classical strings on the breaks, slower strings in the foreground and an almost subliminal digital bump that runs beneath everything. Brass horns add bombast on the breaks and a couple DJ scratches put the bow on top.
Mike is taking a few swings from the grave, with “Leave Me Alone” aesthetic in full steam. Changing channels blast breaking news on all the troubles that found him later in his career. His continual 3rd person reference is initially disconcerting until you get into the rhythm of the song. Media outlets brand him dismissive names and the charges have dimmed his light. The vultures seem intent on ruining his legacy and the people never seem to get enough news whether substantiated or not. There is vitriol and anger in abundance and a naïve regret. “Why is it strange that I would fall in love? Who is this boogeyman you’re thinking of?” is Michael’s lament as he sees himself as a target. We’ve heard it from him before, but it’s just nice to hear something new.
This song will not convert anyone to Michael Jackson that wasn’t on the bus before. It’s solid, but dated and a topic we’ve heard. But if you are a fan, damn if for a few minutes he’s still alive. The king is dead, long live the king. “Breaking News.” Enjoy.
