What’s up to all of the Planet Ill crew!
This week’s Indiesent Exposure puts the spotlight on some diverse Hip-Hop and Soul music grooves from some talented folks representing the European Union.
Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!
Let’s get it in:
The first time I heard any of London producer/songwriter Colin Emmanuel’s (a.k.a. Black Einstein) dope music creations was after randomly copping a record at one of the many shops around New York City’s St. Mark’s Place around 2006; a 12-inch that featured a driving, yet spacey Hip-Hop remix of KRS-One spitting lyrics called “My Thing!”.
Throughout his long career, Black Einstein has done official production and remixes for a diverse group of artists, including Corrine Bailey Rae, Estelle, Mary J Blige, Spacek, D’Angelo and more.
Black Einstein possesses a soulful style of crafting sounds that is reminiscent of Mark Clive de Lowe; masterfully ranging from traditional R&B and boom bap, Hip-Hop sounds to excursions into multi-layered Drum & Bass, NuJazz and Two-Step grooves.
Along with an ever-expanding collective of singers, MCs and instrumentalists, he definitely has it going on with making music ready for any situation with a diverse collection of mid-to-high tempo tracks ready for multiple moods.
I’ve chosen two of his recent free EP releases (the David Bowie-influenced Whatever Happened to Major Tom? and a collaboration with soul musician Eric Roberson) for people to check the genius of Black Einstein. The way he deftly structures songs plus selecting the right musicians to work with for the creation ambitious, yet accessible joints is something listeners can be grateful for.
