9th Wonder has done some of his best production on R&B flavored tracks over the years. He adds more melody and makes more interesting sample choices, as well as deviates from his favorite drums. He crafts a smooth, yet flavorful track for Mississippi’s own David Banner, who along with guest rapper Ludacris and soul singer Marsha Ambrosius put their collective foot in “Be With You.”
There is a soft flute that runs melodically alongside recurrent trumpet blasts and sparse piano plunking. Ambrosius serves as an additional instrument; her vocals weaved into the fabric with clashing cymbals and a pacesetting bass line. The beat breaks perfectly in time for Ambrosius intervention.
Banner is smooth on this track crafting imagery that will have the sharpest groupie in the front row thinking that they are the only ones. He’s in full control of his verbs, creating syrupy sweet imagery from home in Mississippi to exotic locales. He breaks off his words his diction is crisp and it’s an all-around solid performance for Mr. Banner.
Ludacris, as usual crushes the guest appearance with his acrobatic delivery. His high speed rhymes always captivate but his pimp talk gets corny after hearing it for the past decade. He’s still kicking the same shit he’s always kicked in the same way, but like Mariano Rivera, if you have one pitch and deliver it perfectly, you can still be a champion.
“Be With You” is dope. It’s a cool change of pace from what son the market, it’s not tough talk, it’s not sex talk and it’s not aimed towards kids. Roll down those Cadillac windows turn up the volume and cruise. Enjoy.
