It’s Thursday and time for our customary look at everything borrowed, boosted and beasted on the freestyle front. This week we have some mashups and interpolations along with our normal straight out beat jacks, so enjoy the eclecticism of it all. Then we are going to close things down with Drake’s “November 18,” not because it’s a freestyle, but because it’s November 18th. Duh.
Before we get to that, we have Girl Talk.
Girl Talk aka Gregg Gillis made the island known as the internet tip over when everyone rushed to his side to download All Day. No one knew it was coming. He just popped up and said “Hey, I made an entire album and I’m going to give it away for free. Here you go.” I’m not mad at him.
Hundreds of songs are interlaced to create some pretty decent and unexpected mashups. There is no real consideration for genre or time frame. That’s why they are so whimsical. All Day is not his best, but definitely fun, thoughtful and engaging. Just think about Fab weaving a narrative about the excess of the Hip-Hop lifestyle over a track from INXS. Get it? Take a listen and you will.

Next up is Jay Rock over Dre’s “Kush” track. I’m hearing some tipping around a few Jay-Z bars here and a shout to 4 Loko (yall crazy for pounding those things), but mainly I’m hearing what I always hear from Jay Rock, anger. This dude is like Hip-Hop’s Candy Man. If you say his name three times into your head phones he crawls out of your speakers. Considering some of his lyrics, that’s probably the last thing you want.
Jay Rock – “Kush Freestyle”
Now we have Laws lacing Kanye’s Dark Twisted Fantasy sounding like well…Kanye. The impression falls off as the song moves forward, but he doesn’t really replace it with his own personality. This song is okay at best. The lyricism is simple, but the beat still knocks.
Laws – “Dark and Twisted”
Horse Shoe G.A.N.G. and One-2 go in over Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” I don’t know who is who here, but this posse works out the track. Some of the intonation from rapper #1 is amusing to me. I can’t imagine he really talks like that, but at least he’s trying to carve out a signature sound. Anyway, this is some of that hard core Cali goodness. Enjoy.

Next on the list is CurT@!n$ over Cee-Lo’s massively sexy “Bodies.” Of course there is no innuendo or suggestion here. The narrative is straight forward and abrasive as it normally is when Hip-Hop meets sex. Either your emo’ing it out with a snot rag and a bottle of wine or you’re weeded up and ready to fluck some unknown bishes. *Sigh. CurT@!n$ is still a dope emcee. He’s just a bit rough around the Lady Killer edges and typing his name is a pain in the ass.

Closing this party down is Malcolm and Martin. Styliztik Jones and KB Imean have dropped a mixtape with DJ Revolution called Malcolm and Martin Were… Criminal Minded. I’m sure you have already figured out what legendary group is responsible for the gently re-worked tracks. What I suggest is you pick up the whole thing on the crew’s Bandcamp page. If you need some prompting, listen to the tracks below.

Wait. I’m not done. One more thing. Its’ Diggy dropping some gems over Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones.” Word to these 2nd generations Hip Hoppas. Ok, now I’m done.
