Better late than never, Kanye drops a Saturday night special edition of G.O.O.D. Fridays with his latest, “Looking For Trouble,” featuring Pusha T, CyHi da Prynce, Big Sean and J.Cole. The internet sat with bated breath waiting all Saturday for King Kanye to drop. Was it worth it? And where the hell is Charlie Wilson?
Thankfully there is no annoying device for this track, no autotune, no distortion; no beat-run 3 minutes after the actual song is finished. A crushing drum provides the foundation of the track with a Memphis blues guitar adding subtle sullenness. Low synth keys and an electric guitar sprinkle a bit of funk on top. Cymbal clashes add a pompous arrogance befitting the rappers on the track.
Pusha T opens with an ode to the Shower Posse and more drug dealer baller talk. The money’s made him dismissive and rude, and barely able to tolerate the people “beneath” his station. Scarface worries of a lack of progeny to carry on legacy in the midst of villainous prosperity. Brands you can’t pronounce or can’t afford.
Kanye verse x follows Givency is shouted, his sexual prowess is touted; a few other brands are shouted and fat chicks are ousted, although Ye doesn’t want you to judge him for it. You can hear the hand of a writer on his verse as he’s not depending on swagger or his Chi-accented delivery on this and the line construction and connection feels like he’s gotten his push down to a tee. Solid verse regardless of who originated but nothing amazing.
CyHi continues his rise with a solid verse that doesn’t have many punch lines but does continue his streak of cocky guest spots. His verse is dense with his stanzas packed within his his rhyme scheme. The straight forward delivery enables you to hear everything in rhythm.
Big Sean’s verse is not as well mixed as the rest of the song which means he was probably the last verse added and the song holdup. He hollars at detractors that say he sounds like Jay, Drake or Kanye, and says he’s chilling with that thrilling three while you watching him on TV. Sean’s off-kilter delivery and steeze switch-up mid song recalls Nicki Minaj’s patented mania. I’m just saying.
J.Cole closes with a chip on his shoulder. He’s got the strongest presence on the song and the best rhymes, and there is an extra oomph in his delivery that he should learn to harness and duplicate elsewhere. The beat drops towards the end of his verse and you can hear him foaming at the mouth…and that’s a good thing.
It was late, but G.O.O.D. and thankfully absent of the over-the-top stuff Ye has been recently enamored of. Sometimes you gotta keep it simple stupid and you don’t have to look far on this track for trouble. Enjoy.
