Trailer Treat: Bruce Lee, My Brother

By Odeisel

With the wealth of information available regarding Bruce Lee’s life and career, it is a daunting task for aficionados to separate fact from fiction.  Much of the material available comes from opposite ends of the spectrum: either overly reverential or overly cynical and intent on debunking his “legend.” Very little is known about his formative years before he came to the United States in order to make his way in the world.

Robert Yip hopes to fill that considerable gap with his upcoming biopic Bruce Lee, My Brother. The film is told from the perspective of Bruce’s brother Robert.  The trailer shows Bruce’s early childhood to his young adult years, covering many key moments and milestones.  His home and family life look to play a significant part of the film’s narrative.  There is ample humor on display, and the more “legendary” elements are reduced to reasonable levels.  Actor Aarif Li has the unenviable task of playing Bruce Lee, which means he will not only have to mimic Bruce’s mannerisms but also his physical prowess and martial skills.

Those who are looking for an action packed romp that has a young Bruce Lee handing out freshly-opened cans of whup ass might be disappointed.  While there are fight scenes shown (including one that seems to play as a homage to Bruce’s face off with Chuck Norris in Way of The Dragon), they oddly don’t seem to be the centerpiece of the trailer.  What can be gleaned from the trailer is that Bruce Lee the martial artist turned movie star might not be the story that this film is trying to tell.  Bruce was a real person who had a life that existed outside of gyms and movie sets.

Bruce is a worldwide icon.  Among the hero worshippers and detractors, there are those that have sincere interest in learning who he really was.  Beyond all the myths, legends, and milestones, there is the story of a man who would go on to change the world.  That story is valuable, and it deserves to be framed in an objective and unbiased way.  Though it appears very lighthearted in tone, Bruce Lee, My Brother looks like it may fill in a few gaps by presenting a more human portrait of cinemas original one man army.  It’s been a long time coming, but now its time to get to know the real Lee Jun-fan.
