Smashing Pumpkins has been a revolving door of contributors and sounds for a while now with Billy Corgan serving as touchstone. The music hasn’t all been solid but Corgan has soldiered on, never discounting his vision. It appears that grind has paid off with an inclusion on The Vampire Diaries Soundtrack.
“The Fellowship” is going to be included On Corgan’s Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project as well, but it fits really well with the concept of being a teenaged emo bloodsucking loner. Even those kids who haven’t cut the teeth of the undead will definitely be able to get with the “us” against “them” theme of the single.
The song is kind of electronic, kicking off with what sounds like the fast paced blips and bleeps of a Super Simon game or maybe a club version of Morse code. There isn’t a lot of build as you are immediately are dropped into the first verse, but the pace is quickly re-set with a dark guitar riff, a pulsating synth and a heartbeat of a bassline. The 80’s hint grows as the verse progresses to the hook; a battle cry suggesting that you’re either fighting with us or you are getting your ass kicked.
The electro bleeps flow through the layers of music, sometimes sitting on top, sometimes buried by the guitar or Corgan’s voice. Sometimes the bass and guitar are dropped completely in favor of the electronic element. It’s an odd dance between the synthetic and the organic, but it’s done well.
Could Smashing Pumpkins manage to have lightening strike twice? Or is Corgan going to scoff at the comeback ala LL? Either way, judging from the response to “The Fellowship” it looks as if there is some light at the end of Smashing Pumpkins new tunnel.
