I’m starting to get a bad feeling about Pusha T going solo. The salmon flavored suit was one inkling.  Pledging to take Kanye’s sloppy seconds was another. Without Malice to ground his arrogance, is Pusha too far out there to maintain his identity? Is being surrounded by all that G.O.O.D. diluting the bad that made us love Pusha as an MC? That remains to be seen, but the new track featuring the long time homie Pharrell, “Arm Game” doesn’t give a clear indication.

The beat is an interpolation of a familiar rhythm. Regrettably that source escapes me but you’ll know it when you hear it. This version uses an accordion to alter the energy of the rhythm. Soft drum bumps beneath, establishing the pace along with faint hand claps.

Pharrell does his customary falsetto over the breaks to the beat of Gwen Guthrie’s “Ain’t Nothin’ Going on But the Rent.” It’s not annoying but it’s not great vocally, and I can’t imagine it working live (like most falsettos).

Pusha T’s rhyme scheme is eerily close to Pharell’s performance on Snoop’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” leading a bit of credence to the rumors of ghostwritten verses. Pusha takes aim at gaudy obnoxiously big jewelry pieces that are probably fake. He doesn’t fake jacks or front, but tonight he’s on one at the Playboy Mansion trying to spot the real boobies from the fake ones. Good luck with that. He’s courtside at the game, ringside at the fight, oceanside at the beach and pretty much everywhere that people who are getting money go to watch things bounce. The aim of the game is the get something hot to latch on to that arm and look pretty.

Pay to play has become acceptable these days and flaunting your affluence like a peacock seems to be the way to make the ganders flock to the geese. If that’s the case and you got that butter then stick that arm out and let the birds fly south. Remember, you get what you pay for. Step up your Arm Game. Enjoy.
