It’s been a long time since 50 Cent and Kanye faced off in an album stare down. There seems to be no signs of hard feelings however as their two camps have come together with a bit of help from Fabolous and Swizz Beatz on the prelude to Hunger For More 2, “Start It Up.”
Swizz Beatz mans the chorus and the ad libs in his usual festive manner. He’s been everywhere lately for whatever reason on some “Where’s Waldo” ish but his addition doesn’t ruin this song so it’s all good. The vrooms and the title speak to auto racing. That omnipresent snare drum gives way to a thumping drum and distorted synth. There is definite knock in thisLeslie-produced beat and enough motion to which you can pick different parts to flow.
Lloyd Banks opens the track with internal rhyme scheme and a lot of I got more than you got rhymes which ain’t a bad thing. Banks references Georgetown centers, orphan Annie, Benjie and other getting money allegory.
Kanye has big presence on this track and his verse comes in two pieces. It’s not that he hasn’t kicked this verse before with frat house level humor concerning the placement of “chestnuts” and milfs and that kind of stuff. His rhyme patterns is technically sloppy and not as sharp as the other two on this but he compensates with flavor and delivery. The highlight of his verse is “First album I vomited, the second I colonic’d it/ain’t nobody fucking with me, I platonic’d it. Indeed.
Fabolous closes up with razor sharp lines and precision, albeit simple flows that show how masterful he can be when focused:
Plenty hate, they be taking shots, never penetrate/money generated, if we ain’t in the house, renovate
Trying to eat, we ain’t finna wait/ Where’s da dinner plates?
BMW, 10 to 8, Interstate 95, passenger/Baddest bitch in the states,
Half Spanish, Half Trinidad Complexion Henny straight/Y’all ain’t got your business straight,
Track star, I’m ‘bout to skate/ time is money and I can’t afford to be a minute late
Fabolous manages to stunt hard while weaving those clever lines and descriptions we’ve come to expect, at least from his mixtape incarnation.
While there have been a few tracks recently that are very similar in construction, particularly from both West and Banks as part of their Friday promotions, this track can hang. Start your engines.
