J. Cole is one of the prime spitters of the New School. Poppin’ much junk like Jay- got his back, Cole has let off a few shots recently. This one is self-produced and features Fresno’s finest, Fashawn and rapper Omen on a track titled “Relaxation.”
Simple keyboard progression forms the basis of this beat, combined with a knocking muffled drum that sounds like someone knocking on the door. The drum is a bit too unrestrained, which forces the MC’s to overpower it because it doesn’t stay in one place but they don’t seem to have a problem with it. With headphones on I kept looking up to see if someone was at the door and that was annoying as hell. There is some subtle brass that comes in spurts and adds flavor.
Cole opens with a consistently dense yet acrobatic flow. He will sleep with your girl when you’re out of town, so watch him. He got the sound that “bitches ride around humming and the n***as stay thumping and the haters hate bumping.” There is no two line dependence on rhyme scheme because the beat won’t allow it and that’s just fine ‘cause Cole gets busy.
Fashawn comes in seamlessly with a tight grip on the heat if haters want to get funky. He ain’t in the mood for shit talking chicks who tease on the phone but snowball his efforts to get the coochie, but hey, who is? His verse is mostly floss but on this track the delivery is the main weapon and he flows well enough to sound ill.
Omen brings up the rear with a dope internal rhyme pattern that uses syllabic rhymes in three places. He’s got a few clever lines like “concentrate like Adolf” and he alters the scheme to an avalanche effect that opens with the set-up line, pauses, then doubles and triples up with the closing lines.
With all the high speed flows, “Relaxation” sounds like anything but, especially if you’re a listener trying to keep up. It’s short and sweet spitting and perfect for your quick Hip-Hop fix.
