Recently in New York, ESPN The Magazine celebrated the release of its second annual Body issue hits newsstands this month featuring Amar’e Stoudemire, Diana Taurasi, Camilo Villegas, the USA Water Polo Team, Tim Howard and Ester Vergeer on six separate covers. The event, held at the SoHo Skylight brought out all the stars and DJ Cassidy spun classic hits all the way from the 70s to new millennium grooves.
Planet Ill manned the red carpet and spoke to the star in attendance, asking them what their favorite body parts were of both sexes, with a few wrinkles thrown in. This is the first installment. Their answers may surprise you. We also asked Amar’e about the infamous shoot. Peep his answer.
Jeanette Lee “The Black Widow”(Professional Billiards Player): Body parts on a man? That’s a good question. Maybe a strong back. On myself, I don’t really have one. I’ve always been a work in progress. I grew up really self-conscious. Not that you can tell it now, but I did.
Planet Ill: Have you ever imagined that Pool would take you this far?
Jeanette Lee: No. You don’t ever really think about it. I think that’s the way it is for most athletes because they’re so good at being great at their sport, not what you get out of it. It’s what you want from it, you want to be the best at that. That’s where everything else comes in.
Planet Ill: What is the most important thing that being a competitor has taught you?
Jeanette Lee: I think what competition has taught me the most is what courage means because a lot of us think that being a competitor you have to be fearless, but actually, to be a great competitor, you’ve got to know that you’re going to fall, you’ve got to know that you’re going to get hurt. You’ve got to know that there are risks and be willing to step up and keep getting up and going at it and I think that’s very encouraging and you can take that to all areas of your life.
Planet Ill: That’s a pretty intimidating name, The Black Widow. Do you find that guys are intimidated by you?
Jeanette Lee: Oh definitely, I don’t know if it’s the name or the game, but it’s a lot of fun to break a man’s balls.
Planet Ill: When’s the last time you hustled somebody?
Jeanette Lee: [Pauses] I have no comment on that matter. [laughs]
Lolo Jones (U.S. Olympic Hurdler): On a man? I like the stomach, abs. And a chest. And I hope he doesn’t have a bigger chest than me! Stomach is my favorite for sure. On myself, I like my legs. I work hard for them
Adrienne Bailon (Former Cheetah Girl, Current Soloist): Hands. I like big, manly hands. Big hands. On a woman: An ass!
Planet Ill: What are you working on these days?
Adrienne Bailon: I’m signed to Island/DefJam, I’m actually finishing up my album. Estelle has two records on the album that she wrote. One called “Hello” and the other one called “They Don’t Know.” Now I’m heading to Miami to record with Pitbull and he’s doing some production on the album and then the album will be wrapped up.
Planet Ill: How different is it working as a soloist than as group?
Adrienne Bailon: It’s very different in a great liberating way. You kinda get to do whatever you want. It can be scary because if it all goes wrong it’s all your fault.
Estelle (UK R&B Singer): On a man, I like a good abdomen, like some good abs. Yes all that and some good cheeks. On myself, it’s my legs, I think they are fantastic! And my back, but you can’t see her.
Planet Ill: What are you working on these days?
Estelle: I’m finishing up my album. It’s coming out early next year.
Planet Ill: How has fame treated you so far?
Estelle: It’s cool, it’s always great to see it on a bigger scale, and out here it’s a different animal, but it’s fun!
La La Vazquez (Former VJ, Reality TV Star): On a man? Umm…umm [giggles] his arms. On myself, I like my eyes. I think that’s something I don’t have to worry about keeping in shape or anything like that so it works.
Planet Ill: Watching your show, what did you notice that was different from while you were living it?
La La Vazquez: I think when you’re going through that process, a lot of things go over your head because you’re so busy; you’re so crazy. It was a lot of things that I saw on the show that was like, “I don’t remember that! Oh wow that really happened.” So to me it’s kinda like my personal photo book of just remembering the whole entire process.
Planet Ill: As popular as your show is, it’s based on a singular event. How do you pimp it? If they want you back next year, how does that work?
La La Vazquez: That’s a good question. The thing is, there is talks about me coming back and doing something else, we just figure out what the next thing is. I’m definitely building my company. I have an acting career that I’m working on so there’s a lot of angles that can go with it so we’re trying to just figure out what the best thing is.
Plane Ill: How did being a VJ and being on camera before prepare you for having your life open like this?
La La Vazquez: I think I’m comfortable with the camera obviously being a VJ I had the camera in my face all the time. I was already used to it so it didn’t come as a shock to me.
Amar’e Stoudemire: My total body; I’m a total body type of dude. I like to be able to stay fit all the way around. On somebody else? It all depends on what you’re looking for[laughs].
Planet Ill: What are your expectations this year in New York?
Amar’e Stoudemire: Expectations are high. We have a great chance to be successful here in New york. You know guys have been working extremely hard all year so it’s going to be a great year for us.
Planet Ill: There have been a lot of controversy over you particular photo. Can you tell the fans out there how the photo shoot actually went down?
Amar’e Stoudemire: It was great man. It started in California. Great photo shoot; the director and producer came up with their own different skits that they wanted the photographer to shoot and they went from there.
