The sixth man was made popular in basketball by John Havlicek of the Boston Celtics of the 1960s and 70s. It was a player who wasn’t a member of the starting five, but could come off the bench and give you big numbers and leadership. They may not have a regularly stellar stat-line but a great sixth man can get you at least five wins easily. Throughout history you’ve had players like Vinny Johnson from Detroit, Manu Ginobli in San Antonio, and Toni Kukoc from the Bulls. And from Harlem, NY there was Andre Hudson, known to most of you as Hud6.
That’s what that 6 stood for: the sixth man ready to deliver and to provide that leadership, even if he wasn’t the star or getting the most attention. I went to high school with Dre. We didn’t call him Huddy then, or at least I didn’t. He was always a cool dude. Later on in life, he hooked up with Harlem World, got a little fame and stayed close to the industry. But unlike so many who get big headed or different, Dre never changed.
A couple years later we lived in the same building or one of his relatives but we remained cool. We got caught up in the blackout a couple years ago and I gave him a flashlight as we bumped into each other in the dark ass staircase. It was a small thing and the flashlight was nothing but he always made it a point to shout me out over it because that’s the kind of guy he was.
I’ve been lucky enough not to have much death in my life. Most of my friends who were on the streets got off them and they numbers few to begin with. I was really hurt by his death. We were best buds or anything like that but it was a reminder of mortality and how one night everything can change so fast. “Where you can’t put your vest away and say you’ll wear it tomorrow cause the day after, we’d be saying damn I was just with him yesterday.” Almost 24 hours before, Dre was tweeting about family and life and being thankful. And then it all went away. May he rest in peace.
Cam’ron who was his man since Minisink and quarter waters dropped a joint in his memory. I won’t bother with critiquing it. It’s enough that he made the effort for his friend. Hud. 6. R.I.P.
