Life is all about wins and losses. If you tally them up at the end and your W’s exceed your L’s then you should be applauded. I believe if everyone lived by that credo then most folks would probably wish away this past week because the last handful of days have made the fail whale look like a minnow.
First there was poor Ryan Outrich, whose racist tweets to Lebron James were retweeted by James and then picked up by just about every sports outlet in existence. Needless to say, he immediately closed his twitter account. I can’t imagine the response he received, well actually I can but if you can’t take the n-word heat then maybe you shouldn’t be standing in a bigot’s kitchen..umm.. or something like that.
Then there was all this mean spirited hoopla about Wacka Flacka Flame’s burning down the 8 spot on MTV’s greatest emcee of all time list. Okay, it’s actually the hottest emcee of right now list. All the more reason for none of us to give a damn. Remember when we actually didn’t? Ahh.. the good ole days.
Juan Williams was fired from NPR because he told Bill O’Reilly that he thinks Muslim people are scary, especially on planes and XXL took a few hits for their upcoming cover which features 50 Cent flexing his guns with a towel wrapped around his face while standing behind Soulja Boy who happens to be grabbing his own crotch. It just looks a little… odd.
Then we heard Nicki fired Diddy and Jay was about to be a father and we got excited. Turns out the two rumors that should have been true weren’t.
*Sigh
Anyway, on with the show mes amis. We have a lot to cover so let’s get to it. There is rock. There is rap. There is pop, but no snap thank goodness. First up is Teairra Mari (bless her heart) with a little something to say over “Deuces.”
I’ve never quite understood this girl’s issue in the industry. She can sing. She’s attractive, but for some reason it just hasn’t happened and probably never will. Watching her continue to try is hella amusing though. The narrative here is pretty pat. He wasn’t doing what he was supposed to do. She left and now he’s trying to wheedle his way back in. I’m telling yall her voice isn’t half bad. Give her a chance.

Next up is Mark Ronson covering Arcade Fire’s “We Used to Wait.” The song is from their latest album, “The Suburbs” that I can’t say enough good things about. The cover is blah at best, but I say that because “The Suburbs” will end up on my year end best of 2010 list. Listen and tell us what you think.

Moving on we have Rick Ross who must live in a studio these days throwing a verse on Gucci’s “Gucci Time.” Did you know he has money? Did you know he has expensive cars? Did you know he was a boss? If you answer yes to all of those questions you really don’t need to listen to this. However, he did say he smokes angel dust. I didn’t know that and I wish he hadn’t have told us. Funny thing is this track sounds like it drags. Maybe Rick couldn’t keep up with it at full speed. That’s what that PCP does to you kids. Just say no.

Next up is 50 Cent jackin’ for beats with “Buzzin the Remix” featuring YG. Don’t growl at a chick, but I’ve never heard the original and I don’t know who YG is but I do know that I’m loving the Nu Shooz sample. Wop much? I do. Enjoy.

Now we have Darwin Deez, not to be confused with Deez Nuts, who went way left field to cover Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.” It’s funny how harsh some of these lyrics are when they aren’t carried on the lilt of a female voice. Its odd, but catchy. Deez’s live performance is courtesy of BBC.

Last but not least is Wale, who has been extra quiet since Cudi went al Mr. Rager on him in Complex. I can respect that, but the ode to Mike Tomlin over Wiz’ “Black and Gold” I can’t. DMV reps the Redskins or the Ravens. No giving shine to the Steelers, they get nothing but shade. Remember that Wale. Remember that. Hmph.
