Hot damn yo, here we go again. It’s another installment of And The Beat Goes On, a chronicle of the beats jacks and song snatches that make the music world go round. Well, when someone isn’t kicking out original material anyway. It also gives me a couple of lines to express my confusion with some of the week’s events. This week was about as confusing as it gets.
First up is Jawn Murray, a writer for AOL’s Black Voices blog who used his black voice to tell all these nappy-headed, angry black women who thought Tyler Perry was going to stink up For Colored Girls… that they need to get a perm. All I can do is hang my head on this one. He said it was a joke, but I’m sure he knew it wasn’t funny when he said it. Especially considering the content of the film and how black women have this bumpy road to walk in our relationships with ourselves and black men. It’s just incredibly sad he chose this particular moment to hurl that kind of comment at women who should remind him of the woman who gave birth to him. Then again, I guess she had a perm. Sad story folks, sad story indeed.
Anyway in more light-hearted news, all those nasty drug charges were dropped against T.I. who stayed out of the pen long enough to rename his album No Mercy. Kanye West has been attempting to explain his odd imagery riddled short film to the masses, but since I’m not genius it still makes no sense to me and he’s allegedly been seen around town with Kim Kardashain. These celebrity types like their beef tenderized right? I guess bang bang pass is always the move. Anyway, on with the show.
First up is Weezer.
It seems these dudes are releasing an album every month and they still have time to drop little gems like this on their listening public. The instrumentation on their version of “Un-Break My Heart” is nice. They pulled out the orchestral parts and laid down some great guitar, but the singing? Rivers Cuomo is not Toni Braxton, but hell these days Toni Broxton isn’t Toni Braxton. I hope she makes some money off of this cover too.

Next is Lexicon with a cover of The Ramone’s “I Want To Be Sedated.” It’s not really a cover in that these dudes manipulated some of the lyrics. I’ve never heard anyone take The Ramones into the Hip-Hop realm successfully. This song is no different. Close, but no cigar. The end is kind of dope though.

Moving on we have Hollywood Holt and his rendition of DMX’s “Who We Be.” It was never obvious to me how incredibly irritating X’Man’s duh duh duh duh’s were until I didn’t hear him rapping over them. This freestyle is from Holt’s new mixtape, These Are The Songs That Didn’t Make The Album But Are Still Cold As Hell So Shut The Fuck Up! (Volume 1). Nice mixtape name and the angry rant-rap makes for one funny song, unless hes being serious. Then I worry for this guy.

The party continues with Lindsey Lohan. I don’t know where this song came from or how old it is, but it’s a cover of Mya’s “Walka Not a Talka.” Unfortunately, I don’t remember the original song either. There is a Snoop feature in here and there was one on the original as well. It might be the same one. I don’t know. I’m still shocked someone covered Mya.

Next we have Crooked I with one of his Hip Hop Weekly freestyles. This week the track is Usher’s “Hot Toddy.” Funny, first thing he says after stealing someone’s track is that he’s original and he never copies. This is a dedication to all those ride or die chicks who think it’s okay for their man to bang and leave and bang other chicks and to bang other chicks in public. That’s dope right? Anyway, Crooked sounds great as usual, but his content could use some tweeking.

Rock City over “So Appalled” is the best thing I have for you today. Good track and interesting word play. I’ll leave it at that and big you all adieu for now. Til next week folks.
