Planet Ill Breakdown:Magnetic Man Feat. John Legend-Going Nowhere

By shelz.

John Legend is on a dubstep track. It sounds strange, but why not?  Rae is recording with Beiber.  Talib Kweli featured with Gucci and Jay Z and Jack White have been in studio recently.  Anything is possible.

Magnetic Man is a dubstep supergroup made up of DJ’s Artwork, Skream and Benga and they have an album dropping in October.  One of the reported songs from this project is “Going Nowhere” featuring John Legend.  We stay open minded around these parts, but as anticipated, this song just doesn’t work.

The song opens with what sounds like a novice tinkering with a xylophone, or maybe an electronic interpretation of rain drops falling in different shaped wine glasses.  It’s easy and enjoyable at first listen but after a while the loop of that sound grates. John Legend’s voice is added, then the bassline, some airy digitals wisps and a few other miscellaneous bursts of digi-noise.  Even with the layering of sounds the track manages no more than meh and spends the next four minutes dragging itself along to completion.

Legend doesn’t sound bad but he sounds out of place. The background vocals sound like they were sampled from a negro spiritual The different layers of the song aren’t in sync with each other. This is a generally tedious piece of material and I was pretty happy once it was over.
