Chocolate and caramel. Ice cream and cake. Peanut Butter and jelly. There are some things that were made for each other. Others pairing may taste good by themselves but don’t quite fit when put together. 50 Cent and Soulja Boy each have their fan bases and they don’t necessarily intersect, but on their new collaboration, “Mean Mug” the two flavors mesh surprisingly well.

The track is that hardcore trap shit, with all the familiar sounds that you are used to hearing. You almost expect to hear Rick Ross on it or T.I. when he was good. Those double snares are there, as are the Michael Myers-style piano and the claps. Tailor made for that new millennium (or old as it were) gangsta shit.

50 is in full grit with a fluid rhyme scheme that I haven’t heard from him previously. His stanza arrangement is not the typical A/B scheme and fits well with the beat. He’s rhyming through his teeth on some gully shit, but he’s already known for the peel-your-cap music. Soulja Boy is not, but surprisingly he doesn’t sound out a place at all. That isn’t to say that you want this to be his new transition in music mainly because it wouldn’t be believable without 50 having his back, but it’s not ridiculous. It’s borderline impressive when you consider the candy store raps he’s famous for. If for nothing else it’s a new wrinkle in his game that he can go to for a surprise single or two in the future.

The pair go together well; a blind date that actually worked. It ain’t time for a best of both worlds album, and the song won’t do anything to further 50’s colossal career, nor further Souljah Boy, but it’s the kind of song built for the present day. Every now and then you can try a fried bologna and jelly sandwich and be surprised by how good it is(I know it sounds wild but trust me it’s good). “Mean Mug” Enjoy.
