Planet Ill Breakdown: Wiz Khalifa-Black And Yellow

By Odeisel

Pittsburg is known for many thing. Wiz Khalifa is the latest in a long line of things from Pistolvania including the Pirates and the Steelers, whose colors he proudly represents on the track “Black and Yellow”. The song is his first single off his freshly signed major label and if it’s any indication, the production values are higher, his personality is ready, and all engines are go.

Noticeably absent is the drowsy, Snoop-lite delivery that has characterized his last few mixtape releases. The high energy production on this doesn’t lend itself to laid back melody. As a result, Wiz is more assertive on the mic. The subject matter isn’t complex, hes got the canary diamonds, he’s got the yellow paint and black striped whip. Key-less entry and all that good stuff. He’s stunting in full force and representing Steeltown to the fullest. The ladies love him because he’s knocking down their best friend (hey his words not mine). Sipping that Veuve Cliquot champiggly and rocking so many diamonds in his watch he can’t read the face (maybe he just uses his cell phone to know what time it is). And let’s not forget the Taylor Gang representation.

The beat is lively, particularly the last verse which drops some heavy synth into the production and settles back into regular motion. There is a piano for emotion and some digital drums for thump. While all the Raven’s fans out there will probably give the color scheme a thumbs down, this is a solid first single and should bang from you whips, whether they are black and yellow or not.
