Planet Ill Breakdown: Rihanna-Who’s That Chick?

I think it’s clear that Rihanna is totally out of the darkness and back into the very bright lights. Her latest single and video, “Who’s That Chick?” finds the pop darling in full glow and very comfortable in Gaga like surroundings.

If there was any genre ready-made for a singer like Rihanna, it’s dance music. There are booming thumps and ambient sound that will erase any sub-excellent vocals. She’s lithe, limber and fresh-faced, lending radiance to any video that would accompany such a song. Rihanna can weave in and out of any club beat and leave behind one of her famous repetitive refrains that are perfect for dance.

The song itself begins with a “Billie Jean” like thump that evokes the spirit of the gloved one and from there and Rihanna delivers her trademark vocals. She just wants to dance and be noticed as the “it” chick at the party; the Cinderella whose slippers never come off. You can’t keep up with her and you can’t help but wonder who that girl is tearing up the dance floor. Everybody is going crazy, making out on the dance floor and the revelry puts Rihanna in the moment.

The video evokes a colorful Wonderland with weird shapes and Pee Wee’s Playhouse-type imagery. This girl just wants to have fun and the startling imagery is a bit lollipop childish, but it may reflect her mind state in the middle of her dancing haze. All the light bright colors give off add to the hysteria and quite possibly a bit of biting off the Gagas of the video world, but Rihanna’s way easier to look at and she’s not dressed in steak.

Simply put, if this is where Rihanna is going, she’s going to flat out kill it. And I mean that in a good way. Who’s that chick? You already know.
