The singles we are getting from Nicki Minaj are curious. Everyone who admits publicly that they can groove to her (they’re coming out of the woodwork regularly you know) love the wild side. When the cork pops and she flies all over the place from soft school girl to axe wielding, wide eyed psycho; that’s when the fans come out of hiding and tout her talent.
These relationship joints don’t properly capitalize off her sonic schizophrenia. They mute all that makes her special and she ends up sounding like all of those other girls who are waiting tables right now because of her. Not a good look.
With that said, “Right Through Me” is some of that album filler Nicki’s camp is passing off as singles for the top pop 40 Ryan Seacrest crowd. It’s not bad. It just tidy’s her up a bit too much.
The synthy track with all its digital strings, guitar plinking and the little whirling melody is very pop. There are wind chime accents and some breathy singing, but what you have from the start is what you get through the whole thing. The thump is very heavy, maybe a little too heavy but I guess it saves this song from having zero depth. This isn’t “Your Love.” It doesn’t have that heavy of a tweener construction. Her lyrics are more exasperation than love. Still though, no growl.
He used to be awesome. It was all so great at the beginning. Now he’s an irritant, a manipulative passive-aggressive irritant. Plus, he knows her like the back of his hand. That’s a bad combination girlfriend. Take my advice and run.
I’m not feeling this as Nicki’s main lane, but I’m sure someone will like it. Enjoy.
