It has been a rough year for so many artists. The fickle listening public has darted in and out of artist traffic, loving performers for a minute then dropping them like a bad habit to move on to the next one. There are some singers we just assume can weather the capricious storm, but even their stock is falling. Neyo, however is one guy we know will be alright. Right?
With CB on the mend, Donnell Jones back in the battle and Lyfe Jennings dropping the album of his well… life, can Ne-Yo still rule the roost? The feedback on “Beautiful Monster” was pretty good, but we won’t really know the full story until his impending album Libra Scale hits the shelves.
The most recent single to liberate itself from the odd concept album is “Amazing You.” It’s the antithesis of “Beautiful Monster” in spirit. The song reaches back into a soul era that existed before electro music filled out iPods and pulls the best from Ne-Yo. The keyboard floats atop a simple drum and a great bassline. The quick roll of Ne-Yo’s delivery is spirited and jazzy. It sounds as if Ne-Yo is backing up his own vocals. He sounds great there too.
The song is about a woman bad enough to make a man never go home again ala Sunshine. She’s trouble and she knows it. So does Ne-Yo. She’s the habit he just can’t quit and most definitely makes a man want to trick.
I’m going to take a wild guess and suggest this song is dedicated to the Pretti character in the movies/extended videos that are supposed to come with Libra Scale. I can’t say much for Ne-Yo’s convoluted concept. However, whether you enjoy the story or not, if most of the songs are like this I think he might just have a pretty decent soundtrack.
