Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is allegedly coming to us sometime in November and that’s not a minute too soon for fans of My Chemical Romance. Their last studio album, The Black Parade garnered some phenomenal reviews and sales (and a shout from the Jigga Man himself), but the convoluted concept album was a little heavy for some of the pop-punk outfits more traditionalist fans.
They can turn those frowns upside down now because the impending LP is a stripped down love letter to rock and roll. Or at least that’s what the band says and a bit of confirmation did come today in the form of a first single.
“Na Na Na” starts with a really nasty riff and is followed by well… everything else. The tide turns quickly. Everything but the kitchen sink is dumped in and all of the sudden you feel like tossing your hair around Ricky Rachtman style and jumping up and down. It’s fast paced, driving and very loud; mosh pit ready and full of aggression.
The punk outweighs the pop even when the kids go into the great dreamy break, where Gerard Way bleakly proclaims “Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to die.”
The tunes lyrical content goes hand and hand with its abrasive sound. They are young. They are loaded. The world you imagine for them is a purgatory they would rather not rest in. They would rather blow the whole damn thing up than cut their hair or something like that.
There are times when “Na Na Na” explodes vertically and seems to bounce around in the same place, but it manages to punch out of that spot and gain momentum as it does. My Chemical Romance is one of the most technically adept groups you can catch in this game. The instrumentation is usually top notch and with Green Day’s producer Rob Cavallo on deck for this album, I’m expecting something good.
