Mickey Factz is putting in some serious work these days. He’s got a mixtape entitled I’m Better Than You, and he’s actually trying to prove it. The last appetizer before the meal comes courtesy of Big K.R.I.T. (on production and batting cleanup) entitled “Get By.”
The track begins with a speech excerpt from Marti Luther King Jr. whose closing note is to put notice on the idea that people think that the “only thing right is to get by. “ There are rough synths on the edges and funky drummer type drums and light organs on the periphery. Nothing is overdone and it all blends fine, providing enough grit and drama to go with Mickey’s compelling narrative.
Mickey gets to the heart of his choice of Hip-Hop over NYU law. You’ve heard the decision itself, but perhaps never as personal as he explains it. His decision involved going against family wishes and maybe even common sense and took a lot of belief in self. Once he made the decision and the hard work began to pay off he was face with the scrutiny that comes with the spotlight. In what should have been a windfall for him with his Honda commercials, he instead got some negative feedback and was accused of being a sellout. Factz delves into these issues and how they have fueled his fire and he delivers his rhymes with emotion and you can feel all the tumult.
Big K.R.I.T. delivers what has become expected competence with meaning and depth. His verse is decidedly less intimate but his flow is smoother, which is to be expected when you’re flowing over the beat you made. Allegory to the Matrix runs through his verse but in the end his determination to do more than “get by” is readily apparent. Enjoy.
