There are rare times in Hip-Hop when you get better than what you expected. You get the posse cuts and you hope that you get a couple lines and that the beat is dope but rarely does it all come together like bukakke. The latest installment of the G.O.O.D. Friday movement gets as close as you can to the perfect group hug with “So Appalled.” You have the star power with the Jiggaman and Kanye, You have the beat delivered by the immortal RZA, the gutter represented by Pusha Ton and new blood, Kid Hood style (R.I.P.), with CyHi The Prynce’s performance.

First stop is the beat, perfectly orchestrated with strings, distorted electric guitars and those trademark RZA drums that bang and rattle but don’t overpower the other parts of the beat. The chorus is simple and memorable. Swizz beats plays the ad lib role of the hype man that Puffy was born to play. While Swizz is adequate in his role Diddy would have probably elevated the track to timeless status.

Kanye opens up in full MC mode, with very little of the Luis Vuitton Don shit. He’s spitting hard and not wasting time with that “I know better but I’m an asshole” rap and pimps his Chicago alliteration to the fullest, shoe-horning words into matching. Clever lines abound and a bit of humor as Kanye notes, “the day that you play me will be the same day MTV play videos.”

Jay-Z comes through next in full veteran rapper arrogance, amazed by the idea of rookies taking shot at the throne like he’s an easy win. No whisper, no cute vocal styling, just that weight that you’re used to hearing from an angry Hov. Jay again chronicles his transformation from most loved to most hated, and how his progress has pushed him to the highest of heights (one in particular at the expense of MC Hammer). Listen for the baby jab at Sigel.

I went from the favorite to the most hated, what would you rather be underpaid or overrated?

Moral victories are for minor league coaches, and Ye already told you we major you cock-roaches.

‘Nuff said.

Pusha T kicks that unashamed coke rap and spits it in the face of detractors. He’s totally believable and the chilling nonchalance adds a matter-of-fact malice (no pun intended) to his street tales. His Tony Montana-like paranoid, bemused opulence is all over his verse, which he ends fittingly with “I own you all.”

The highlight, however is Cyhi, whose distinct voice and clever lines  are boosted by the surprise factor that he is delivering in the presence of legends. He’s strong and distinct, claiming to be on God’s iPod, manipulating months (listen for it), lines like “keep a Trojan on me…Matt Leinert” and the way he ties his lines together are very ill. “Cause you haters got PhD’s, ya’ll just some major haters and you math minors, Tiger Woods, don’t make me grab iron.” Feel free to frown your face now. I’ll wait.

“So Appalled” has just taken the bodybag collabo award from Reflection Eternal’s “Only Just Begun” and Macho Man elbow dropped it. That the rappers delivered on a non-minimalist beat with distinct verses and no slacking is necessary. That they all served with so much aggression and style is all we could have wanted. Enjoy.
