This week’s edition of Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Friday features an all-star cast of Kanye, Big Sean, Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi and Charlie Wison on the track “Good Friday.” With such a wide cast, you would think the song was major, but in execution it’s a bit underwhelming. Common appears on the song for about 4 bars, Cudi is only there for the chorus and Charlie Wilson is on some Smurf shit, only going “la la la lala.”
The beat is cool. Kanye’s drums are very punchy and boxy and a few scratched in vocal samples provide the background noise. The main rhythm is provided by a piano. There is enough motion on it to keep you interested throughout aurally. There are light strings at the close of the songs that could have added some flair if put in the body of the track but they close it out well.
Big Sean’s verse is very high school, teasing suckas for wifing bust downs. He does attempt to add a bit of style to his vocals but it’s kinda girly, similar to Lil Kim’s flow on “Ladies Night.” He thinks with his dick admittedly, and this verse is more evidence of that. Kanye’s verse is fairly standard, accented on by light distortion. The only real above average verse on this belongs to Pusha T who is “selling kilos throught your iPod Nano.” Not one of his best verses but easily the class of this song.
“Good Friday” isn’t much of a standout song for any reason other than the cast fo characters. They have all turned in far better performances both alone and en masse. It’s not wack by any means, so don’t trip you can bump. And at least it’s not eight minutes long with vocal runs. But you’ve had better Fridays. Enjoy.
