One of the best ways for a female singer to get female fans on board is to speak directly to them and their shared reality. The generic recipe is simple. There is a dash of tragedy (because life is hard). Then there is the epiphany (because at some point things have to change.) Then you close with the payoff, the point where the clouds part and our heroine can start living it up without all that drama.
It’s a pretty clichéd theme in music, but it still works. The ladies love an anthem, especially if it deals with ditching the dude and getting her empowerment on. From Monica’s “Still Standing” to Mary J’s “No More Drama” ladies love to come through the storm and toot their horn because they did. Chrisette Michele’s latest track, “I’m a Star” fits the mold and stands well in the above mentioned company. Yup. The ladies are going to LOVE it.
The tribal style drums in the intro are joined by some aggressive chimes. A bouncy piano and some thump come in just as Chrisette starts to explain her rise from the bottom to where she is now. Drama, bad news and tears laid the foundation, but she built something so great on it that it carried her to the heavens. Those are some heavy duty boot straps.
The rest is all champagne toasts and Hip Hop hook dreams. She’s a star. She tells you that on the verse. She tells you that on the hook. Hell, there’s a bridge in this song (remember those?), and she’s a star on that too. Sometimes you need a piece of music that can sway your mood and get your mind back in order. Singing along can do nothing but make you feel good. So, I’m with you girl, humming along as I’m sure you knew us ladies would.
