The songs keep-a-coming from Mr. Mars and his upcoming LP Doo Wops and Hooligans. There was a live version floating around last month but here we have the studio version of “Grenade” and all of the digital manipulation that entails.
From a production standpoint, I prefer the live version. This is like polyester music; not a natural note in sight, but that how we get down these days.
There’s a simple intro, just a piano and Bruno’s voice giving us the play by play on a relationship he’s having with an ice queen. He gives. She takes. He loves. She takes. He would die for her and well… she would let him.
The song builds, incorporating a tribal drum and some layered background vocals co-signing his never ending devotion to a woman who obviously doesn’t give a rat’s ass about him. Did he say she beats him? Damn. Or maybe the tail end of that metaphor got lost in all the synth. I’m not sure.
He would catch a grenade for her. He would throw his head on a plate for her. He would even jump in front of a train for her, even though she wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire. Marshmallows anyone?
It’s a bit dramatic, but Mars has never sounded better. He brings the melancholy from the first note and grows from there delivering a passionate performance better than anything I would have expected from him. Bravo sir.
Oh, listen to the tags, as if you had a choice. Word to HHC.
