Belle & Sebastian have a history of going against industry grain. During the mid 90’s when even Euro-Rock was getting a bit gangsta they stuck to their retro, feel good pop guns. They released their influential 2nd album, If You’re Feeling Sinister with no promotion, live shows or pictures of the band. Even their latest single, “Write About Love” was initially dropped by just handing it over to some random fan to do whatever they wanted with it.
Through all of their drawing way outside the lines, the band has managed to capture and retain an immensely loyal following that are no doubt happy to hear that the 8th album, Belle & Sebastian Write About Love, is right around the corner.
The title track is an upbeat, retro piece that dares you to not hum along. Yes, it’s very 60’s. It immediately evokes images of blunt cuts, raccoon eyes and mod, color-blocked dresses. Especially if you see the single cover because well.. that’s what the model is wearing. The guitars and keyboards are groovy in a love-in sort of way and guest singer Carey Mulligan’s cutesy, yet flimsy voice fits in perfectly.
The narrative of the song is all about shaking the doldrums, getting over the fact that your regular schedule is boring, and snatching bits of enjoyment when and where you can.
This is most definitely mood music and not for everyone, but damn if this doesn’t sound like a readymade Target commercial. When it happens, remember you heard it here first.
